Welcome and Introduction
Dr. Barbara Hales (00:02) Welcome to another episode of Marketing Tips for Doctors. I’m your host, Dr. Barbara Hales, and today we have with us Justin Allan Montgomery. Justin is a nurse practitioner who transitioned to building a highly successful eight-figure course business. He’s the founder of Pro Course Start, a platform helping professionals create their own educational businesses. Welcome to the show, Justin.
Justin Allan Montgomery (01:21) Thanks for having me, Barbara. Appreciate it.
Getting Started in Course Creation
Dr. Barbara Hales (01:29) Justin, can you tell us how you got started with creating courses and building your business?
Justin Allan Montgomery (01:44) Sure! In 2019, I was working as a nurse practitioner and started to feel frustrated by the traditional work setup. I knew I was worth more, and after scaling a couple of men’s health clinics and telemedicine practices, I realized I had some unique skills. I started a blog, The Elite Nurse Practitioner, to share my experiences and knowledge, and people started asking me how they could do what I did. That’s when I decided to create a course on how to start a men’s health practice, which ended up making $50,000 in a few weeks with zero marketing. That’s when I knew I was onto something.
Scaling the Business
Dr. Barbara Hales (03:44) That’s impressive! So, after that success, what happened next?
Justin Allan Montgomery (03:49) From there, I started creating more courses on various topics like telemedicine, cannabis clinics, women’s health integration, and weight loss. I kept the focus on nurse practitioners. It didn’t take long for the business to grow into a seven-figure business in the first year, and eventually into an eight-figure business. All this happened in just a couple of years.
Challenges in Starting a Course Business
Dr. Barbara Hales (06:12) What are some common challenges or pitfalls people face when starting their own educational business?
Justin Allan Montgomery (06:36) One of the biggest pitfalls is underestimating the time and effort needed to get started. People think it’s a quick process, but creating quality courses that appeal to professionals takes time. You’ll need about 120 hours of focused work to launch your first course. Another challenge is shifting your mindset from being a professional to becoming a digital creator and marketer. This shift is crucial for success.
Creating Passive Income through Online Courses
Dr. Barbara Hales (09:10) What advice would you give to doctors looking to create their own passive income through courses?
Justin Allan Montgomery (09:18) My biggest piece of advice is to focus on delivering real value and be authentic in your marketing. People are looking for personalized care and knowledge, and they’ll pay for it. A key is to believe in your expertise and know that you can offer something valuable that others are willing to pay for.
Marketing Strategy and Building an Audience
Dr. Barbara Hales (12:04) What are some key marketing strategies that worked well for your course business?
Justin Allan Montgomery (12:15) The key is building an audience. You can’t just sell a course; you need an audience that trusts you. The best strategy is creating valuable, free content that resonates with your target audience. I recommend creating content at least two times a week and then promoting it on social media. This helps you build organic reach. Once you’ve built your audience, you can start selling through your email list. That’s where the magic happens.
Overcoming Common Obstacles
Dr. Barbara Hales (17:12) What’s one major mistake that doctors should avoid when marketing their own courses?
Justin Allan Montgomery (17:21) The biggest mistake is trying to sell without truly believing in the product. If you’re not authentic, people will sense that. It’s crucial to market what you believe in and focus on helping people, not just making sales. When you genuinely solve a problem, that’s when the marketing clicks.
Social Media and Content Creation
Dr. Barbara Hales (20:29) If a doctor is new to marketing and content creation, where should they start?
Justin Allan Montgomery (20:36) Start with content creation. Create authentic content that speaks directly to your ideal clients. Whether it’s blog posts, podcasts, or videos, the content should solve problems and build trust. This positions you as a thought leader and keeps your audience coming back for more.
Scaling Your Course Business
Dr. Barbara Hales (23:23) Where can our listeners learn more about you and your course creation program?
Justin Allan Montgomery (23:31) You can visit Pro Course Start for all the resources. You can also email me directly at justin@procoursestart.com for any questions. I’d be happy to help.
Webinars as a Marketing Tool
Dr. Barbara Hales (25:37) Do you think webinars are an important tool for course creators?
Justin Allan Montgomery (25:45) Yes, but I also think it depends on your business model. Webinars are excellent for lead generation, but they aren’t as scalable as pre-recorded courses. You need to find a balance. If you’re using webinars, they can help you build your email list and engage with your audience, but ultimately you should focus on evergreen content that generates income 24/7.
Closing Thoughts on Transitioning to Online Education
Dr. Barbara Hales (30:40) For professionals who are considering transitioning to creating educational content and courses, what’s your final piece of advice?
Justin Allan Montgomery (30:50) Take the leap and start building your course business with a solid foundation of value. Don’t worry about having everything figured out from the start. You’ll learn as you go. Trust in your knowledge and believe that there’s an audience out there who needs what you have to offer. It’s a mindset shift from being an employee to being an entrepreneur.
Conclusion
Dr. Barbara Hales (33:01) Thank you, Justin, for sharing your insights today. This has been another episode of Marketing Tips for Doctors with Justin Allan Montgomery. We hope you’re feeling inspired to create your own course business. Until next time, goodbye!
