The transition from services rendered to value-based care in reimbursements can be a very scary and worrisome trend for health professionals. After all, can it really be 100% of the physician’s actions that determines the outcome and health of patients? Doesn’t patient compliance contribute to the picture?
Cerner states that it now has a tool that will help make the transition easier.

Cerner Unveils Patient-Centered Tool to Support Value-Based Care
EHR vendor Cerner will partner with health plan Lumeris to create a tool for patient-centered care and provider experience in value-based care models by driving patient-centered care and removing administrative burden, the two companies announced. Rollout is expected to begin during the second half of 2018. ,
The newly created tool, Maestro Advantage, will support providers who participate in Medicare Advantage and other value-based payment arrangements that demand better patient relationships and preventive care planning.
Maestro Advantage will reduce the amount of friction between patients and providers during the care access and data sharing process. The tool will streamline administrative duties, which in turn will make it easier for patients to access their healthcare and for providers to manage that care across different care specialties along with data transparency.
Patients will be better positioned to access their own health data, while providers can exchange information between themselves during care management activities.
Removing administrative barriers to care will ideally improve the patient-provider relationship, the two companies said. Administrative burden is a significant cause of provider burnout and pulls provider attention away from patient relationships.
Cerner CEO and chairman Brent Shafer points out that:
“For decades, Cerner has focused on creating technology that improves how people receive and provide care,” said . “By using data to reduce or eliminate unnecessary costs and ineffective transitions of care, providing doctors and their patients a more complete view of their medical history and a health plan that consistently receives high quality scores from CMS, this collaboration with Lumeris aligns well with our mission and illustrates the potential of Cerner technology to positively impact health care economics and outcomes in deeper, more impactful ways than before.”
Maestro Advantage should also better support providers’ care management activities. Specifically, better data exchange and access should allow providers across various EHR networks to access patient information.
The tool will also streamline redundant processes such as collection of patient health history, patient-generated health data, and other health information stored in the health record.
As providers build larger care networks to attend to patients’ primary, preventive, and chronic care needs, seamless care transitions will be essential. Better transitions of care are not only financial important, but also a key aspect of creating a positive patient experience driving patient centricity in healthcare.
Providers should be able to focus on disease prevention and other primary care activities. They should also be able to put patients at the center of care relationships, rather than focusing on data and other technological needs that often cause hiccups in the healthcare space.
This partnership comes as the healthcare industry continues to grapple with the demands of value-based care. Success in these models may yield strong financial payoffs, but adequate care management, patient engagement, and preventive care access is necessary to ensure overall patient wellness.
Technology that puts the patient at the center of care and that allows providers to focus on disease prevention could help providers achieve key value-based care goals.
Lumeris chairman and CEO Mike Long claims:
“Our collaboration with Cerner holds incredible promise at a time when it is urgent we fix our health care delivery system. Maestro Advantage creates a patient-centric health care delivery network. Prevention and wellness become the top priority rather than treatment and ‘sick care. Physicians and care teams will get access to timely data and easy-to-use, actionable insights at the point of care,” Long continued. “Combined with a proven, value-based accountable primary care model, physicians can truly advocate for their patients, ensuring they receive better care and are more satisfied on their health care journey.”
While there is destined to be some confusion at the onset, ultimately, having patient-centric care with patients understanding options and reasons behind them, will translate to better compliance and therefore better results.
Hopefully!
