One of the best ways to boost your search engine ranking and have prospective patients see you on the first page of Google searches, is by having loads of backlinks.  The thing is, are you publishing content that is destined to fail?

Here are three mistakes to avoid for marketing success.

1. Boastful, instead of helpful

The key in content marketing is to be informative, helpful, entertaining and engaging.  Using time and space to become self-promotional instead of servicing others, is one of the biggest mistakes (and turn-offs!)

Infographics, videos and blog posts should provide solutions to the problems your target market is struggling with, rather than a copy of your business brochure.  Create unique content or a new spin to content that is already on the market.  Want to get links and quoted by the media?  Give them something new to quote.

2.  Stale, same-old, same-old

When you say the same things over and over again or that many others have already said, “Are you really going to be read and spread”? Spark interest by coming up with new ideas, statistics or new quotes.  Consider running and analyzing surveys. Check out what people are saying in response to your polls.

Some say that promotion is everything in relation to content marketing, but in truth, the concept of ‘if you build it, they will come’ doesn’t work anymore.  Uniqueness does.

3. You’ve Got the Wrong Number!

Are you calling upon the right people?  Figure out who your target market is.  No matter how great your content may be, if it is not relevant to the people viewing it, your campaign will hit by the delete key faster than a reeking pile of dung.

Promote your content to the right people- those who will be prospective clients of yours…those who are interested in the services you offer. Personalize your email campaigns and show a reason for them to be read. Make your viewers feel special and not one of a massive blast out. Send pitches to the right audience.

How We Scaled a Startup from 0 Organic Traffic to 100,000 Visitors/Mo (In About One Year).”

His campaign had three main goals:

  • Create content that attracts relevant search traffic from their target audience.
  • Generate links to the website to help improve rankings and search visibility.
  • Gain traction and authority in the space and grow brand presence through social.

Concentrate on setting one main goal for a piece of content and working toward that which garners links. Ask yourself: “is this something I can see publishers linking to?” If not, it’s time to change the format before you spend time on content creation which fails to perform.

Content formats that attract links:

  • Infographics
  • Videos
  • GIFs / Memes
  • Other Images
  • Research
  • Expert Interviews
  • Case Studies
  • Whitepapers
