Introduction to Carrolee Moore Drummonds and Podcast Pitching Society

Dr. Barbara Hales 00:00
Welcome to another episode of marketing tips for doctors. I’m your host, Dr. Barbara Hales, and today we have with us a very special guest by the name of Carrolee Moore. Carrolee Drummonds is the founder of the Podcast Pitching Society, a boutique podcast booking agency that positions underrepresented experts for high-impact podcast guest appearances. With a background in sales and marketing, Carrolee knows how to turn earned media into a powerful amplifier for credibility, thought leadership, and mission-driven storytelling. After transitioning from a successful corporate career, she built a multiple six-figure business in under two years without relying only on ads, social media marketing, or SEO. And for those around that don’t know what SEO is, it stands for Search Engine Optimization—that’s correct. Her signature anti-social content marketing approach helps mission-driven professionals cut through the noise of the reality to garner true thought leadership, built on expertise, not vanity metrics. Welcome to the show, Carrolee.

Thank you so much for having me on the show, Barbara. I’m super excited to have this conversation with you.

The Transition to Podcast Pitching

Dr. Barbara Hales 01:42
How did you get into what you’re doing now with podcast pitching? How did that come to be?

Carrolee Moore Drummonds 01:49
Honestly, everything that I’ve done after college, as much as I didn’t know it at the time, was connected to storytelling, right? I fell in love with storytelling after coming to this country as an immigrant and needing a way in. Movies, music, books—everything kind of became how I entered into the culture. It was really, really important to me. After I became okay, I’m here, I understand it now, I still kept feeding on that. So, I went and got my degree in communications media, and then most of my career has been in non-creative spaces. I was in project management at McKesson. I was in corporate relations at MIT. I was doing all these other things that seemingly had nothing to do with graphic design or even public relations, or anything that I got my degree in, but I was actually doing it on the side that entire time. Eventually, it came to a head right as the pandemic hit, and it was a blessing in disguise because I got laid off a week before the pandemic started. Instead of finding another job, I took what I was doing on the side and turned it into a full-time gig because I wasn’t the only one getting laid off. Many people were starting their own businesses and wanted help in marketing and design as well. I took my love for storytelling, which has always been there. I’m a writer, a poet, and all of those things, and took them into the work I was doing in my marketing agency. I found that I really don’t like social media as a form of marketing. I know we need to use it, and I teach people how to use it responsibly for business, but it’s not something I enjoy doing. So I wanted to find other ways to grow my business that didn’t force me to be on social media for hours each day. I looked into long-form storytelling formats, and as you know, as a podcaster, this is one of the best ways to do that. My team started pitching me for different podcasts, and I was getting asked to be on different podcasts as well. Eventually, I just fell in love with it, launched my own podcast, Be More Mindful, and it kind of started from there. When I closed my marketing agency and thought about what I wanted to do next, that was really the most natural transition point for me. I had to think about where marketing was heading for the next five to ten years, and what people actually wanted. They want to be sure, when making a buying decision, that the person they’re buying from—especially if it’s a service provider—is actually who they say they are. And the best way to get that “know, like, and trust” factor as soon as possible is podcasting. So I really dug into that, and now I help other people do the same.

Overcoming Mindset Challenges in Entrepreneurship

Dr. Barbara Hales 05:47
Oh, that’s a good story. What were the biggest challenges you faced when starting out, and how did you overcome them?

Carrolee Moore Drummonds 05:58
The biggest challenge was mindset, which is actually the reason I started my podcast Be More Mindful after a few years in business. I realized that there are so many podcasts, books, and articles about the doing of business, but not the being of business. You have to have a certain level of fortitude and resilience. How do you develop that? What do you do when everything around you says that you’ve failed? How do you keep going? I wanted to answer that question for those starting out or thinking about entrepreneurship. The biggest challenge was mindset, and it still is, like every day. Choosing this insane journey called entrepreneurship requires the right mentality, and it takes failing, which sucks.

Finding Purpose and Impact in Business

Dr. Barbara Hales 07:04
But you’re absolutely right. Was there a turning point or a pivotal moment that helped you transition from a startup to success when you said, “Oh, this is where I want to be, and I’m making it”?

Carrolee Moore Drummonds 07:18
There was definitely a point. After I closed down my agency, I spent three months talking to people—experts, people I looked up to—and I really wanted to understand what they needed. I didn’t want to build something I believed in and try to force the market to accept it. I wanted to build something that was already needed, and that’s when the response to what I launched was different. I realized the purpose of the business is more than revenue—it’s impact. When I see that my work helps someone change the world and get more visibility, I’m blown away. The impact is so much more powerful than just having a pretty logo.

Top Strategies for Effective Marketing and Visibility

Dr. Barbara Hales 09:07
Well, as you know, no matter how great you are and how much you have to offer, if people don’t know you’re there, it’s going to be irrelevant. So, what are the top strategies you’ve used to market yourself effectively in your field, and how do you think these can be adapted to other professionals?

Carrolee Moore Drummonds 09:39
I will tell you my top strategy, but I’m also going to give general advice that will be helpful. My top has been speaking. I’ve recognized that as long as we can get people on our discovery calls, we have a pretty high close ratio. If we vet them well, meaning we’ve done the work to know this is something they actually want, when they understand it, it’s easy to close. Anything where I’m speaking—whether it’s on a stage, at a masterclass, or virtual podcast—has been incredibly lucrative. One of my recent podcast interviews this year resulted in 10 sales meetings from one episode. We’ve already booked and closed several clients from that one podcast, while people are posting on social media 20-30 times a week and not seeing that level of traction. So for us, anything to do with speaking has been very lucrative.

The Services Offered by Podcast Pitching Society

Dr. Barbara Hales 11:38
So when you’re getting your clients, what is your actual service that you’re providing?

Carrolee Moore Drummonds 11:46
We have a “done-for-you” and a “done-with-you” option. We don’t just get you placed on the right-fit podcasts. We also help you craft your story, work on content creation, and prepare you to ensure that the podcast appearance maximizes your visibility and conversion. After the podcast goes live, we create reels, captions, social media posts, blog posts, and email sequences to convert your listeners into clients. We handle everything from pitching and preparing you for the podcast to content creation afterward.

Avoiding Common Mistakes in Podcast Guesting

Dr. Barbara Hales 17:37
What are two mistakes that people make when thinking of starting their own podcast or guesting on other people’s podcasts?

Carrolee Moore Drummonds 17:47
People focus too much on the size of the audience and not enough on impact. Many get excited about being on TV or large platforms, but the real question is, how many people in that audience are your ideal clients? Focusing on numbers rather than true engagement and impact is a huge mistake.

Actionable Tips for Success

Dr. Barbara Hales 19:50
What are two tips that you’d like to give our listeners to get more success right away?

Carrolee Moore Drummonds 19:50
First, create a story bank. Think through different times in your life and pull out stories that connect with your audience. These stories can make your content stand out in a personal way. Second, get on podcasts. Don’t just start your own podcast right away. Instead, guest on others’ podcasts to get in front of existing audiences.

Email Mini-Course Introduction

Dr. Barbara Hales 23:43
I would be remiss if I didn’t mention that you have an email mini-course. Tell us a little bit about that.

Carrolee Moore Drummonds 23:43
The email mini-course walks you through our proprietary framework. It gives you the tools to do great research, craft pitch letters, and improve your podcast appearances. It’s self-paced, but I check in and make sure everyone is progressing. You’ll leave with everything you need to start pitching your podcasts successfully.

Dr. Barbara Hales 25:59
Love that. Thank you so much, Carrolee.

Carrolee Moore Drummonds 26:04
Well, it’s been a delight having you here today. This has been another episode of Marketing Tips for Doctors. Till next time, bye.
